The Taiwan Shinminpo News Special – Reopening Ceremony of the Taichung Railway Line in 1938

Publication date: 1 Dec 2023
Author: Lee Yi-ling, Kawashima Naoko |Staff member of the Archives of Institute of Taiwan History

The Taiwan Shinminpo was the only newspaper published by Taiwanese during the Japanese colonial era, representing the voices of the Taiwanese people in contrast to the official stance of the Taiwan Nichinichi Shinpo. Its reports covered a wide range of topics, making it a rich source for diverse research subjects.

On July 14-15, 1938, Taiwan Shinminpo published a special issue for two consecutive days titled "Celebrating the Restoration of the Taichung Line," totaling four full pages. This commemorated the reopening of the Taichung railway line, which had been severed since the 1935 Hsinchu-Taichung earthquake. This earthquake caused numerous casualties and severed north-south transportation, significantly affecting local society and economy. Through archived newspapers, diaries, photos, old documents, and maps, this article revisits the scene of the 1935 earthquake, reviewing Taiwan's most severe natural disaster in history and the subsequent reconstruction efforts.

Archives Retrieval

For many years, the Archives of Institute of Taiwan History has put in a great deal of effort to collect and preserve important archives and historical materials. For the sake of accessing archives and supporting academic research, the Archives established Taiwan Archival Information System, which has compiled different archives such as folk papers, personal and family records, and governmental and individual archives for the past 20 years. The online catalog of archives is open. The ITH Archives welcomes people to search online or to visit the Reading Room to retrieve documents in person.

The Reading Room is open to people aged 18 and older. The Archives of ITH is open from 9:00 to 17:00 with no break at noon from Monday to Friday and closed on weekends and national holidays.

Our archives are kept in closed stacks. In light of the difference in data form, collecting agreements, copyright law and other regulatory restrictions, the archives are classified into three types according to access level: viewing and transcribing in ITH Archives, viewing and printing in ITH Archives and online viewing and printing without limitations. Readers who intend to access the archives have to register an account on Taiwan Archival Information System (TAIS) first. After logging in TAIS, readers can identify access level of archives by the field named “Alternative Form Available” which is under the “Series“ hierarchy.

If you would like to access the archives at ITH personally, please send the “Archives Retrieval Application Form” to our e-mail address two days prior to your visit. We would not inform you when your requested archive is prepared. Please come to ITH Archives Reading Room on time according to your appointment. Our staff will assist you to access the archives upon your request. The procedure for archives retrieval usually takes 20 to 30 minutes.

The terms of use are mentioned above. Please refer to the “Archives Reading Policy in the Archives of Institute of Taiwan History, Academia, Sinica” for more details. If you have further questions or requests, please feel free to contact us.
