Since the opening of the Humanities and Social Sciences Base at the Academia Sinica South Campus, we have not only provided digital archive resources for viewing in the South Campus Digital Library and Archive, but also plan to further promote important archival collections and research results by holding the first archive exhibition at the South Campus this September. The theme of this exhibition is "People in Formosa", inspired by Taiwan's location in the southern part of the Northern Hemisphere, surrounded by the sea, situated at the crossroads of East and West, and connecting North and South. It is also in the subtropical and tropical climate zones, giving the central and southern regions unique tropical and cultural landscapes. In terms of species ecology and local customs, there are many exchanges with southern tropical islands. Focusing on the multiple meanings of the South and tropicality, we have selected precious historical materials, including traditional business letters, Taiwan Government-General passport registries, private diaries, manuscripts, photos, old newspapers, rare books, and planned three exhibition areas. The first area is “Journey across the Ocean”: Traveling back in time from the Dutch establishment of Tainan to the present, showcasing cross-border exchanges for various purposes. The second area is “Grow on the Island”: Exploring the rich products and representative fruits nurtured by Taiwan's unique geography and climate. The third area is “Art in the Southern Country”: Integrating southern imagery into paintings, as well as youth music tours and co-creations between art and literature during the Japanese colonial period. We sincerely invite you to visit the exhibition, follow the sound of the waves, explore the island's land, and experience the cultural grandeur of the past with all five senses. |
