Travel Literature: Travel Writing during Wartime (1938 - 1944)

The Institute of Taiwan History, Academia Sinica, in the years past unearthed a precious collection of the published works in 1938 – 1944 of “Taiwan Shin Min Pao” and its successor “Shing Nan News”, the only newspapers launched by the Taiwanese during the colonial rule of Japan. This piece goes through a selection of the accounts of travel that are of interest and, with the descriptions given by travelers from Taiwan and Japan to be complemented by such colorful collections as photographs, travel tickets, old papers, postcards and others, it invites you to read through the tracks of the travelers in question over tens of thousands of miles across Beijing, Manchukuo, the United States, Germany, Burma and Vietnam and discover the landscapes around a turbulent world in the midst of war from nearly a hundred years ago and the heart-felt worldviews of the travelers.

Chen Zhi-qi (1906-1931) was born at Xizhi, Taipei. While he studied in Taihoku Normal School, he joined in the painting club which was directed by Ishikawa Kinichirō. As for Chen, this leisure activity opened the door toward his painting career. In 1925, he went to Japan’s Tokyo Art School (Tokyo Bijutsu Gakka) to study Western Painting. During his school time, he achieved high achievements, including selected to art exhibitions of Kohukai (光風會) and Kaizyusya (槐樹社), and selected to the Exhibition of the Imperial Fine Arts Academy for twice. He also took part in every Taiwan Fine Arts Exhibition from 1927 and earned the special grade prize. Because his brilliant painting skill, he even earned the honor of “Non-evaluation (which means his paintings are all master level and need no evaluation to judge the quality)” from the committee of Taiwan Fine Arts Exhibition. People praised he is a genius in painting.

Chen Zhi-qi was a passionate person and always held ideal in painting. Although his painting career was only seven years, he threw all his energies into painting. He planned and founded Qixing Painting Forum (七星畫壇) and Chidao Club (赤島社) with his friends, such as Chen Cheng-po, in order to promote art education in Taiwan. His contribution is inerasable for the foundation and development of fine art in early Taiwan.

This record group contains private correspondence, paintings and kinds of collections of Chen Zhi-qi and his family. They are classified into seven series: documents and manuscripts, paintings, private correspondence, photographs, postcard collections, scrapbooks and books, and other collections. There are total 137 items, over 2,900 images, in the record group. All the contents are opened for access with completed metadata. We provide free access to the digital images of this record group in Reading Room of Archives, ITH. You can also get the copies here, except the private correspondence series which can only be copies by transcribing.
