2017-03-07
“Taiwan Rehabilitation Association and 228 Incident Papers” records Yang Zhao-jia’s experiences while he was moving to Shanghai and engaging in business since 1945 to 1950. This series contains the archives relating to Yang’s efforts of concerning Taiwan’s problems, including Republic of China (led by the Kuomintang) taking control of Taiwan, 228 Incident and the political situation of Taiwan and Shanghai.

“Taiwan Rehabilitation Association” was a nationwide group founded by Ko Tai-shan and his partners in Chongqing in August, 1945. Their main goal was concentrating people’s power to reconstruct Taiwan after the colonization under Japan. Yang Zhao-jia had organized “Taiwanese Alliance in Shanghai” and was nominated as the director. After Ko Tai-shan’s recommendation, Yang founded “Taiwan Rehabilitation Association Shanghai Chapter” and served as the director. In July 1946, six organizations in Shanghai including Taiwan Rehabilitation Association Shanghai Chapter sent the representatives appealing to the KMT government, Legislative Yuan and Executive Yuan for reforming the political and economic circumstance in Taiwan. However, Taiwan Provincial Administrative Executive Office was infuriated by this act and arrested Yang in the name of traitor. After Lin Hsien-t'ang and Qiu Nian-tai’s rescue effort, Yang was released after 37 days in jail.

When the 228 Incident broke out in 1947, Yang took flight back to Taiwan on March 1st and intended to investigate this uprising. Nevertheless, he could not contact the external circumstances because of Chen Yi’s monitoring. On the next day, he took flight back to Nanjing and kept congregating the Taiwanese in China, appealing to KMT government for reforming the political circumstance.
