Convergence of Nature and Culture: Seeing Tamsui through Artists’ Eyes

Surrounded by mountains and a river, Tamsui, which used to be called “Hobe”, has always attracted senior artists in Taiwan. Exotic and traditional buildings left by the Dutch, Qing Dynasty, and Japanese feature in its historic characteristics, attracting wandering literati. Artists are also inspired by this historic town. The paintings of Tamsui are a spectacular page of Taiwan’s art history. By following in the steps of Taiwanese artists Chen Zhi-qi, Chen Cheng-po, and Yen Shui-long, let us start a journey through Tamsui across time and space!

Every Day Is a Good Day: Taiwan Dairy Exhibition

Institute of Taiwan History (ITH) is devoted to acquisition and preservation of Taiwan historical materials from both official and private sections. Compared with the content of official records, historical materials from private section observed events from the perspectives of populace. Revealing writers’ time and thought, diaries which depict the personal daily lives, are precious first-hand data for history research, especially personal and family history.

"Every Day Is a Good Day: Taiwan Dairy Exhibition" will be held by ITH at the Open House of Academia Sinica in 2009, including dairy collections, publications and Taiwan Diary Knowledge Bank. 12 writers’ dairies are exhibited, and the time zone of their contents range from Japanese rule period to postwar years. These writers hold different social positions, such as Yasumasa (Zhang Li-jun, 張麗俊), peasant movement promoter (Jian Ji, 簡吉), journalist (Huang Wang-cheng, 黃旺成), lawyer (Wu Hong-qi, 吳鴻麒), Huang Ji-tu, 黃繼圖), doctor (Lin Yu-diao, 林玉雕), musician (Gao Ci-mei, 高慈美), and poet (Lin Chi-xian, 林癡仙). In addition, dairies written by two couples from the Wufong Lin family are the most precious ones. One couple are Lin Ji-tang (林紀堂) and Chen Ling (陳岺), and the other are Lin Xian-tang (林獻堂) and Yang Shui-xin (楊水心). These dairies reveal the appearance of society perceived by the writers in the early days of Taiwan.
