Where did I Leave My Footprints? Lin Xian-tang’s Journey to Europe
Lin Xian-tang (1881-1956), one of the figures in Traveling in Time Exhibition, was the leader of the Lin Family from Wufeng, Taichung. On May 15, 1927, he took the Fengshan Ferry from the Keelung Port with his two sons Pan-long and You-long starting to travel around in Europe and America. They spent 378 days visiting ten countries including the United Kingdom, the United States, France, Italy, Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain and Switzerland. In his diary, Lin Xian-tang wrote of what he had seen in his journey and hoped to broaden Taiwanese’s knowledge of Western culture. Now, let’s follow Lin’s steps by reading The Diary of Mr. Guan-yuan in 1927 to visit Europe!

Rare Books Stored by Taiwan Government-General Taipei High School Library has Released

Founded in 1922, Taiwan Government-General Taipei High School had undergone several changes of name and administration. In 1949, since the Koumingtang Government took over Taiwan,” Taiwan Provincial Teachers College” replaced the original name and received about 20,000 old books from the previous library. In 1967, it was reorganized as National Taiwan Normal University. In order to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the establishment of Taipei High School, the library of National Taiwan Normal University and the Graduate Institute of Taiwan History collaboratively published The Library Catalog of Taipei High School. Based on Taipei High School Library Classification, about 8,000 Japanese old books are categorized into the following subjects: general works, philosophy, religion, social science, language, science, technology, arts, literature, and history.

In August, 2013, Center for Digital Cultures of Academia Sinica collaborated with the library of National Taiwan Normal University to scanned about 1,000 old books. The Archives of the Institute of Taiwan History was responsible for cataloging the books and opening the digital records to the public. In the digitized items, a large proportion of books are in history, followed by the discipline of social science. The catalog is open to the public in Taiwan Archival Information System. According to the Copyright Act, some records can be viewed online and some can only be viewed in the Archives Reading Room.

According to Taipei High School Library Classification, this book belongs to the Japanese history discipline. It was edited by Sasaki Syunichi and published by the Forest Association of Taiwan on July 27, 1936. National Parks in Taiwan: Special Issue includes “The Glacier Problem and Mount Sylvia” written by Kano Tadao, “Several Expectations of National Parks” written by Matsuura Sakujiro, and “A Dream of Datun Mountain National Park” written by Tanigawa Umendo.

According to Taipei High School Library Classification, this book belongs to the discipline of Social Science. It was written by Izumi Furo and published by Taiwan Publishing Company on December 18, 1928. The content of the book includes Taiwanese Nationalism, Taiwanese and the Rule of Governor-General, People’s Movements in Taiwan, Controversial Groups in Taiwan, and the Controversial Issues of the Nilin Peasant Movement.
