Her History in Taiwan

Welcome to discover the voices and stories of Taiwanese women with us! This special exhibition, entitled “Her History in Taiwan,” showcases various materials relating to women’s history, which have been deposited in the Archives of the Institute of Taiwan History (ITH). The range of items in this exhibition dates back from the Qing Dynasty to the Japanese colonial period. The topics include “Traditional Women,” “the Transition of Fate,” and “Self Expression.” They illustrate how Taiwanese women emerge from traditional family to the modern job market and social activities with activism and independence.

The collections in this exhibition are selected from the digital archives of the ITH and include the marriage documents, contracts, photographs, diaries, and personal documents. With the help of advanced digital technology, not only can we preserve the diversity of Taiwan's historical archives, but this also allows us to witness the change in women’s status from dependency to autonomy during the past century in Taiwan. Please join us in exploring how women, once concealed behind closed doors, became independent figures in history of their own right.
